  • Small-scale distributed power generation (SDPG) is the power industry development concept to ensure  transition from the traditional arrangement of energy systems to new methods and practices. This transition is going on in the context of decentralization and digitalization of energy systems, using various types of energy resources. Package power units up to 25MW sited next to the consumer represent the most developed component of the Russian distributed power generation industry.
  • Today, small-scale distributed power generation is the only effective tool to reduce the cost of electric energy for small and medium-sized companies. Distributed power generation equipment may run on different fuel types including liquefied gas, therefore such units may have global reach.

  • A gas genset power plant (GGPP) is a key subject of the small-scale distributed power generation industry.
It is a complete, compact, autonomous and efficient facility to generate electrical and thermal energy. GGPP operates on the basis of an internal gas combustion engine and an alternator - gas genset unit (GGU).
  • The fuel for the engine is natural gas or other combustible gas of appropriate quality. The operation technology of a gas genset power plant which includes simultaneous generation of two resources, electric energy and heat, is called cogeneration. The gas genset power plant enables you to get an additional resource - cold as well. Such a technology is called trigeneration.

  • The main advantages of the gas genset power plant compared to standard power supply schemes are as follows: low cost of generated electricity, heat and, consequently, a quick return on investment; increased reliability of energy supply to the plant. According to experts, using GGPP may reduce heat and electricity costs by 3-4 times, with the payback period of about 5 years.

  • Depending on the customer requirements and installation conditions, there are two main types of GGPP design: stationary (a gas genset engine equipped with necessary auxiliaries is installed inside a capital building) and modular (a gas genset engine equipped with necessary auxiliaries is installed inside a prefabricated packaged block-type building).
  • A modular unit reduces the commissioning time and the cost of project implementation and has no space limitations. The modular unit may be dismantled, transferred, mounted and put into operation within a few weeks.

  • The main advantages of modular power plants (where the engine equipped with necessary auxiliaries is installed inside a prefabricated block-type building) are as follows: quick assembly; lower price; the possibility to put the facility in the open air; easy connection to the power system; capacity increase; the possibility to transfer the unit from one site to another.
  • These advantages make a modular power plant an attractive energy solution, especially for those enterprises that need to meet the high demand for electricity in remote locations in the shortest possible time.

  • When implementing distributed power generation projects (GGPP), the main attention is paid to the quality and range of services provided. Therefore, such projects are usually implemented by engineering companies to perform the entire range of turnkey works – from design and survey works to facility start-up and its maintenance.
  • The implementation time of a GGPP turnkey project depends on various conditions: design, work scope related to external networks, additional customer requirements, etc. The average period of a modular gas genset power plant implementation and commissioning is around 8-12 months. Today, the deadlines may be extended due to logistics difficulties related to the main generating equipment supply.
  • As for the cost of GGPP projects implementation, it is determined on an individual basis due to the current unstable political and economic conditions, the quotations validity period is more limited now than before.
When forming the cost, a price request is forwarded to the gas genset manufacturer, a calculation of works, services, manufacturing of block modules, packaging, etc. is performed. This cost is preliminary and is subject to adjustment after the completion of the design works.

  • An energy service contract is a mutually beneficial tool for cooperation between the customer and the contractor in the implementation of a small-scale distributed power project. The key point here is that all capital investments for the construction of a turnkey facility, all operating costs, as well as all risks are borne by the contractor (or investor partner).
  • The energy service contract may be implemented in the frames of   generating equipment lease agreement.
The value of cooperation in terms of economics is that the contractor, after putting the facility into operation, supplies the customer (enterprise) with electric and thermal energy at discounted prices compared to  prices and tariffs of resource-supplying companies and grids. The discount amount is subject to commercial negotiations.
  • Energy service contracts for construction of power generating facilities have a number of advantages for the consumers: they ensure energy supply reliability and energy costs reduction; immediate economic benefits after the start-up of the facility, with no capital investments; at the end of the energy service contract, the consumer may buy the generating facility to own.

  • Cogeneration is a technology to simultaneously produce electric and thermal energy, used in the electric power industry. The main premise in the cogeneration development is the fact that the process of electric energy generation provides the technical possibility to use (remove) associated heat.
  • Today, this process is the most economically feasible way to generate energy resources, increasing the overall efficiency of cogeneration plants up to 90%. In Russia and abroad, the cogeneration technology is used in up-to-date energy systems, at urban CHP plants which provide centralized electricity and heat supply to a large number of consumers.

  • Trigeneration is the generation of three resources at once: electricity, heat and cold. Trigeneration is a process where part of the thermal energy generated during the gas genset operation is used to generate cold to be used for the process needs of the enterprise and for air conditioning of premises.
  • The trigeneration plants are cost-effective in the sector of small-scale distributed power generation, because they allow using heat recovered from gas gensets not only in winter, for heating purposes, but also in summer, for room conditioning or cooling for process needs.
  • This increases the overall efficiency of the installation, which may be used in such conditions all the year round keeping high efficiency.

  • A gas turbine power plant (GTPP) is a unit to generate electricity and thermal energy. GTPP may comprise of one or several gas turbine units - power units connected to a power generator and integrated into a single energy complex by means of a control system.
  • A gas turbine power plant may be used as a primary or backup power source in parallel with the power utility system. The GTPP may be placed both indoors and outdoors in a modular unit on a prearranged foundation.

  • A diesel power plant is a stationary or mobile power plant consisting of two main components: an electrical generator and an internal combustion engine running on diesel fuel. Connected by a common frame, these components complement each other and provide conversion of mechanical energy into electrical one.
  • The diesel power plants are widely used in areas with no centralized power supply or where certain difficulties with electricity supply occur. As a rule, these are small settlements located in remote and Arctic territories; agricultural enterprises (farms, state farms) located in the suburbs; production facilities located in hard-to-reach places where oil, gas and other natural resources are extracted. This is where diesel power plants can be the only possible source of electricity.

  • Hybrid power complexes (or multi–power complexes) are power facilities comprising several alternative energy sources: a micro-gas turbine (MGTU) or gas genset  unit (GGU); a solar power plant (SPP); an electric energy storage (UPS with battery); wind generation (WPP).
  • As a rule, consumers located in remote and isolated areas of the Far North and Siberia do not have a centralized power supply and get power from the outdated diesel power plants. Multi-energy complexes allow to reduce the cost of electricity production by 3-4 times; increase the reliability and independence of power supply; introduce modern technologies; use environmentally friendly fuels (LNG, CNG); reduce the cost of maintenance of the facility. Cost-benefit analysis depends on the indicators of a particular project.

  • A compressor station is a fully prefabricated unit to supply the enterprise with compressed air. The unit encloses all the necessary equipment according to  the customer request (compressor units, air treatment system, tanks and vessels, automation system, power supply system, security and fire alarm system, ventilation system, piping system for a condensate drainage system). The compressor station may be arranged in various versions: a boxed installation; installation on a base frame, indoors installation; mobile unit on a cargo trailer.
